Writing Music: Soultrane

By Pauly

Heavy rotation this week. Soultrane never lets me down. I posted this last month too.

Soultrane (1958) is often underrated when mentioning John Coltrane's best albums. Soultrane was recorded a couple of days after the infamous Milestones sessions with Miles Davis. At the time, Coltrane was best known as being in Miles Davis' band, but he didn't waste his chance to make his own mark with the Soultrane sessions. I suspect some of the band was dabbling in speed at the time because they play a quick-fire version of Russian Lullaby that Coltrane often snarked that the track should have been titles "Rushin' Lullaby."
